Resource List for Professionals and Students in Human Sexuality and Sexual Science
Hello! My name is Christina Clark and I am currently a doctoral candidate at New York University, Professional Program in Human Sexuality. This list of resources that you are about to look at was compiled during the spring of 2001. As the story goes, I was in the process of preparing for my candidacy exam, and like any student, I was fretting that I did not have a sufficiently well-rounded knowledge of sexuality. I wanted to be abreast of the current thinking in our field, but I also knew it was important to have a historical point of reference from which to gauge the amount and quality of the changes in our field. After some thought on the matter, I came up with a neat idea. Who better to ask about important resources in human sexuality than the very people who have made it their life's work? Having that in mind, I set to compiling a list of e-mail addresses for all SSSS members with a terminal degree and I asked them for their assistance. I told them of my situation and my desire to collect information about important works within our field. Specifically, I asked SSSS members to think about which texts most influenced their current thinking about human sexuality and sexual science and texts they felt were "must-read"s for any young student trying to become knowledgeable in our field. As you might expect, SSSS members took the issue to heart and came through with flying colors! Although we are all very busy, many people took time out of their day to pull together a list of suggested readings and the following list is a compilation of those suggestions. I'd like to publicly thank them for their support and kindness and I hope they know they have taken part in creating a useful resource for students and professionals alike. Thank you! Of course, the list is not exhaustive. I'd like to update the list occasionally and see it continue to grow and evolve as we generate more sophisticated understandings of sexuality and what it means to be sexual. If you happen to look through the list and you note an obvious omission of some critical text, please feel free to e-mail me with your helpful hints and I will make sure it gets added! My address is
